The sensitive detection of explosives and narcotics by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) is performed at low rf power by assuring that the rf field strength is larger than the local magnetic field. Additionally, it has been recognized that signal-to-noise ratio of a signal induced by a specimen of fixed size decrease by only the square root of the coil size. Thus, rather than scaling power linearly with coil size, as conventionally done to maintain the same rf field intensity, the power needs only be increased by the square root of the increased coil size to assure maintenance of the same signal to noise ratio. This technique permits the use of larger coils than previously used. The invention is useful for both volume coils and surface coils.
La détection sensible de matières explosives et de stupéfiants par résonance quadripolaire nucléaire (RQN) est effectuée à faible énergie HF en s'assurant que l'intensité de champ F est plus importante que le champ magnétique local. De plus, il a été reconnu qu'un rapport signal/bruit d'un signal induit par un échantillon à dimension fixe ne diminue que de la racine carrée de la taille du bobinage. Donc, plutôt que de proportionner l'énergie linéairement avec la dimension du bobinage, comme cela se faisait conventionnellement pour maintenir l'intensité de champ HF, l'énergie ne nécessite d'être augmentée que de la racine carrée de la dimension de bobinage augmentée afin de maintenir le même rapport signal/bruit. Cette technique permet d'utiliser des bobinages plus grands que ceux utilisés auparavant. L'invention est utile à la fois pour des bobinages en volume et des bobinages extra-plats.
