An apparatus for detecting a potentially dangerous ferromagnetic object carried inadvertently by a person approaching the magnet of a magnetic resonance imaging system uses the fringe field of the magnet and provides guide members defining a path along which the person is prescribed to pass. The path is generally or approximately parallel to the field at the path. At least one sense coil and generally two sets of sense coils are located on respective sides of the path so that the movement of the ferromagnetic object in the field of the magnet causes a voltage to be generated in the sense coil. The sense coils include vertical coil legs on each side of the path at spaced positions along the path defining a sensing zone having a height approximating the height to be sensed. An electrical measuring device measures the electrical signal and provides a warning indication when the electrical signal exceeds a predetermined value, either by its amplitude or by an integral over the movement of the person within the zone as detected by an independent sensor which senses entry into and exit from the zone.
