The inadvertent or fraudulent transport of goods on the bottom tray of a shopping cart passed a check out stand is detected by providing a first transmitter/receiver element on one side of an alleyway and a second transmitter/receiver element on the other side of the alleyway. The first element has a series of transmitters arranged in a top row of three and a second row of two transmitters with the top row above the bottom rail of the cart and the second row at the height of the bottom rail of the cart. A similar array of receivers is arranged on the second element. In response to a condition in which all of the receivers are blocked, two transmitters which are optically independent and located below the bottom rail generate a beam across the alleyway to two receivers symmetrical to the transmitters at the first element. An alarm condition indicating the presence of goods is generated in response to the receipt of light by both of the receivers of the first element. The system, by using the above pattern, optically distinguishes between goods on the bottom rack of a shopping cart and other objects passing through the alleyway.
