ABSTRACT A method for the diagnosis of HIV infection is provided which is based on the use of tester cells, prepared by genetic engineering, which are capable of expressing an enzyme such as luciferase, which catalyses a reaction by which light is emitted, in the presence of either HIV particles and/or the HIV-TAT. In accordance with this method the tester cells are incubated with a blood sample or a fraction thereof, and light detected, in either the living cells or in extracts above background levels, indicating an HIV infection.
