Chromogenic 3-Indoxyl choline phosphate compounds of formual (I): wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C~1-4 alkyl, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl while R1~, R2~, R3~, and R4~ are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, cyano, nitro, carboxy, amino, amino substituted with one or two C~1-14 alkyl groups, aminomethyl, hydroxy, C~1-4 alkoxy, carboxyalkyl, and sulphonyl. These compounds are capable of being cleaved by lecithinase C leading to products which are colorimetrically detectable. The invention provides safe and sensitive detection of potentially pathogenic bacterial activity of such microbes as Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus anthracis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Heliobacter pylori, Legionella pneumophila, and others in material which may contain such activity typically including physiologicacl samples, goods for consumption, such as food and beverages, and any other potentially infected objects or articles.

L'invention concerne des composés de phosphate de choline 3-indoxyle chromogène de formule (I) dans laquelle R est sélectionné dans le groupe comprenant hydrogène et alkyle C1-4, tel que méthyle, éthyle, propyle et butyle, tandis que R<1>, R<2>, R<3> et R<4> sont sélectionnés indépendamment, dans le groupe comprenant hydrogène, halogène, cyano, nitro, amino, amino substitué avec un ou deux groupes alkyle C1-4, carboxyalkyle et sulfonyle. Ces composés peuvent être clivés par lécithinase C, ce qui donne lieu à des produits détectables par colorimétrie. L'invention permet de parvenir à une détection fiable et sensible de l'activité bactérienne potentiellement pathogène de types de microbes tels que le clostridium perfringens, bacillus <i>cereus, bacillus anthracis, pseudomonas aeruginosa , liseroa monocytogenes, heliobacter pylori, legionalla pneumophila , et d'autres dans des matières pouvant présenter ce type d'activité comprenant de manière générale des échantillons physiologiques, des biens de consommation tels que des aliments et des boissons et tout autre objet ou article éventuellement infecté.
