Methods and compositions are provided for determining the potential of a membrane. The present invention also provides fluorescent complexes of lanthanides having the following formulae: (see formula I) (see formula II) These complexes are used in compositions and optical methods for determining transmembrane potentials across the plasma membrane of biological cells.

Cette invention fournit aussi des complexes de lanthanides fluorescents, dont les formules sont les suivantes : (voir formules I et II).
