ABSTRACT A machine component and a method of detecting the degree of wear of the lubricated component in a machine. A portion of tracer metal (14, 18) is positioned within the component. The tracer metal is a metal not found in the composition of the component but is of similar hardness to that found in the composition of the component. The lubricating fluid from the machine is periodically sampled and analysed to detect when the component has been sufficiently worn to expose the tracer metal which is carried into the lubricating fluid. The component may have portions (14) of the tracer metal embedded therein underlying the surface subjected to wear, or the component may comprise a laminate of metals including a layer (18) of the tracer metal underlying the surface.
