The invention provides a detergent composition comprising from about 0.5 to 65% wt. of a surfactant and from about 1 to 80% wt. of a builder, wherein thebuilder is a polymer comprising a repeating unit of the structure Image wherein X is H, alkali metal ion, ammonium ion, hydroxyethylammonium ion, C1-C12 alkyl, or C5-C12 cycloalkyl, or a combination thereof. The invention alsoextends to a method of washing fabric using this detergent composition.
