-39- ABSTRACT Complementary DNA molecules encoding a novel group of major grass pollen allergenic proteins were isolated using recombinant DNA techniques. The complete nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences for three allergens of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) pollen, are disclosed. Recombinant DNA molecules and hosts transformed with them, which produce the allergens or their peptides, and methods of characterizing these products are described. In appropriate hosts these DNA sequences permit the production of recombinant allergens which are useful for (i) the diagnosis of allergic and asthmatic diseases caused by the corresponding natural pollen allergens, and (ii) the development of effective therapeutic agents for the treatment of these diseases. Furthermore, using antisera to the recombinant allergens, ten antibody binding peptides have been defined. One or more of these epitopes either by themselves or covalently linked with other peptides or polymers may be used for diagnosis and therapy of allergies.
