Methods and apparatus for determining leak and respiratory airflow are disclosed. A pressure sensor (34) and a differential pressure sensor (32) have connection with a pneumotach (24) to derive instantaneous mask pressure and airflow respectively. A microcontroller (38) estimates a non-linear conductance of any leak path occuring at a mask (12) as being the low pass filtered instantaneous airflow divided by the low pass filtered square root of the instantaneous pressure. The instantaneous leak flow is then the conductance multiplied by the square root of the instantaneous pressure, and the respiratory airflow is calculated as being the instantaneous airflow minus the instantaneous leak flow. The time constants for the low pass filtering performed by the microcontroller (38) can be dynamically adjusted dependent upon sudden changes in the instananeous leak flow.

L'invention concerne des procédés et un appareil permettant de déterminer un flux d'air de fuite et un flux d'air respiratoire. Un capteur de pression (34) et un capteur de variation de pression (32) sont connectés à un pneumatochraphe (24) pour calculer une pression et un flux d'air instantanés d'un masque, respectivement. Un microcontrôleur (38) évalue une conductance non linéaire d'une quelconque trajectoire de fuite survenant dans un masque (12) comme étant le flux d'air instantané filtré en passe-bas divisé par la racine carrée filtrée en passe-bas de la pression instantanée. Le flux d'air de fuite instantane représente donce la conductance multipliée par la racine carrée de la pression instantanée, et le flux d'air respiratoire est calculé comme étant le flux d'air instantanée moins le flux d'air de fuite instantané. Les constantes de temps pour le filtrage en passe-bas réalisé par le microcontrôleur (38) peuvent être réglées dynamiquement en fonction de variations brusques du flux d'air de fuite instantané.
