A method and apparatus (10) are provided for estimating the cross-sectional shape and orientation of an earth borehole (12) and the motion of a tool therein. The method and apparatus involve measuring the distance (30) from the tool to the borehole wall at a plurality of locations around the periphery of the tool and fitting those measured distances to a predetermined shape function using a nonlinear parameter estimation technique to minimize the error between the estimated shape of the borehole and the measured distances. The method and apparatus may be used to estimate elliptical and higher order borehole shapes. Additionally, the method and apparatus may be used while drilling the borehole.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil (10) qui permettent de déterminer la forme transversale et l'orientation d'un forage de terrain (12) ainsi que le mouvement de l'outil à l'intérieur du forage. Le procédé consiste à mesurer la distance (30) entre l'outil et la paroi du forage à partir de plusieurs emplacements autour de la périphérie de l'outil, puis à comparer les distances mesurées avec une fonction de forme préétablie en utilisant une technique d'évaluation paramétrique non linéaire pour réduire au minimum l'erreur entre la forme estimée du forage et les distances mesurées. Le procédé et l'appareil peuvent être utilisés pour estimer des formes de forage élliptiques ou d'ordre supérieur.
