Abstract Detoxification Increasingly severe restrictions are being imposed or contemplated as to the manner of disposal of ore bodies which have been leached with toxic lixiviant solutions such as alkaline cyanide. Detoxification procedures in for example heap leaching both lengthen the overall time for a complete process cycle from heap building to heap dispersing and limit the proportion of time in which a heap is productive of metals. The detoxification process of gold/silver ore bodies is accelerated and the extent of detoxification enhanced by incorporating within the ore body a small amount of calcium peroxide, such as from about 0.25 to 5 kg per tonne of ore, and advantageously, the calcium peroxide can be incorporated during the building of the heap.
