ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Dike drainage is detoxified by providing a lagoon charged with Athabasca River water for receiving the dike drain- age. The lagoon is in communication with the Athabasca River through a narrow inlet and is sufficiently large to obtain a substantial residence period. Growth of microbes capable of processing the toxic constituents of the dike drainage which specially adapted microbes naturally occur in the Athabasca River, may be enhanced with the provision of a lagoon bottom of gravel or the like, by the addition of nutrient to the lagoon and/or by aeration of the lagoon contents. -14-
