Abstract of the Disclosure A composition and method for processing a printing plate coated with a subtractive, photohardenable layer, such as a condensation product of at least one diazonium salt in combination with a thermoplastic polymer, i.e. a polyvinyl- formal resin, to simultaneously develop and preserve the plate, in which the plate is contacted with a composition containing a major proportion of water, about 1 to 50 percent by weight of an organic solvent, such as a lower alcohol or glycol ether, about 0.1 to 30 percent by weight of a water soluble colloid, about 0.01 to 10.0 percent by weight of a surfactant or wetting agent and about 0.1 to 20 percent by weight of an organic or inorganic salt or acid and having a pH of about 3 to 11, removing the unhardened, non-image areas of the coating and leaving a thin protective layer of the composition of the plate. Foaming of the composition during use is reduced by adding an anti-foaming agent to the composition or adjusting the ingredients 80 that the composition is near its cloud point.
