A development system in which a powder pattern is formed on a photoconductive surface. The development system includes a particle transport, operable for a variable selective duration of time, for advancing the particles. A magnetic brush developer roller receives the particles from the particle transport and applies the particles to at least a portion of the photoconduc- tive surface. When the particle transport is inoperable, the magnetic brush developer roller removes extraneous particles from the photoconductive surface. An electro- magnet is operatively associated with the magnetic brush developer roller to remove particles therefrom. The electromagnet is operable in response to the particle transport being inoperable.
