A drug delivery device and method is disclosed which produces aerosolized particles of pharmaceutically active drug for delivery to a patient by inhalation. The device is comprised of a liquid feeding source such as a channel to which formulation is added at one end and expelled through an exit opening. The feeding channel is surrounded by a pressurized chamber into which gas is fed and out of which gas is expelled form an opening. The opening from which the gas is expelled is positioned directly in front of the flow path of liquid expelled from the feeding channel. Various parameters are adjusted so that pressurized gas surrounds liquid flowing out of the feeding channel in a manner so as to maintain a stable capillary microjet of liquid until the liquid exits the pressure chamber opening and is aerosolized. The aerosolized particles having a uniform diameter in the range of about 1 to 5 microns are inhaled into a patient's lungs and thereafter reach the patient's circulatory system.
L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé d'apport de médicaments, permettant de produire des particules d'un médicament pharmaceutiquement actif destiné à être inhalé par un patient. Le dispositif de cette invention est constitué d'une source d'alimentation en liquide, par exemple un conduit, qui reçoit une formulation par l'une de ses extrémités et éjecte cette formulation par un orifice de sortie. Ce conduit d'alimentation est entouré par une chambre sous pression, vers laquelle le gaz est orienté et à partir de laquelle ce gaz est ensuite éjecté par l'intermédiaire d'un orifice. Cet orifice permettant d'éjecter le gaz est placé directement en face de la trajectoire d'écoulement du liquide éjecté dudit conduit d'alimentation. On ajuste divers paramètres de sorte que le gaz sous pression peut entourer le liquide qui s'écoule à l'extérieur dudit conduit d'alimentation, afin de conserver un microjet capillaire stable de liquide, jusqu'à ce que le liquide sorte par l'orifice de la chambre sous pression et soit projeté par aérosol. Les particules projetées par aérosol, qui présentent un diamètre uniforme variant entre 1 et 5 microns, sont ensuite inhalées jusque dans les poumons d'un patient, ce qui leur permet d'atteindre l'appareil circulatoire.
