A state-of-polarization (SOP)-independent device (226, 326) and method for determining polyrization mode dispersion (PMD) in an optical communication system having an optical transmission line (224, 324), including a detector (244, 344), coupleable to the optical transmission line (224, 324), where the detector (244, 344) is capable of analyzing a pulse shape of an optical signal on the optical transmission line to determine PMD of the optical signal. A corrector (246, 346) may be coupled to the detector (244, 344), where the corrector (246, 346) is capable of compensating the optical signal for the determined PMD. A controller (242, 342) may be coupled to the detector (244, 344) and the corrector (246, 346). The pulse shape may comprise an eye diagram, which may contain a first peak and a second peak, due to PMD, where the PMD determined by the detector (244, 344) is a function of the distance between the detected first and second peaks which is indicative of a time delay between the detected first and second peaks. The device and method may also include a verifier (348) coupled to the corrector (246, 346), where the verifier (348) is capable of verifying that the corrector (246, 346) correctly compensated the optical signal for the PMD.
Cette invention se rapporte à un dispositif (226, 326) indépendant de l'état de polarisation (SOP) et à un procédé servant à déterminer la dispersion de polarisation de mode (PMD) dans un système de communication optique ayant une ligne de transmission optique (224, 324). On utilise à cet effet un détecteur (244, 344) qui peut être couplé à la ligne de transmission optique (224, 324) et qui est capable d'analyser la forme d'impulsion d'un signal optique sur la ligne de transmission optique, afin de déterminer le PMD du signal optique. Un correcteur (246, 346) peut être couplé au détecteur (244, 344), ce correcteur (246, 346) étant capable de tenir compte du PMD déterminé pour corriger le signal optique. Un contrôleur (242, 342) peut être couplé au détecteur (244, 344) et au correcteur (246, 346). La forme de l'impulsion peut présenter un diagramme en oeil, qui peut contenir une première crête et une seconde crête dues au PMD, le PMD déterminé par le détecteur (244, 344) étant fonction de la distance entre la première et la seconde crête détectées, cette distance indiquant le délai de temporisation entre la première et la seconde crête détectées. Ce dispositif et ce procédé peuvent également utiliser un vérificateur (348) couplé au correcteur (246, 346), ce vérificateur (348) étant capable de vérifier si le correcteur (246, 346) a correctement tenu compte du PMD pour corriger le signal optique.
