A method and device for determining the diameter of a roll: a sensor arranged at a distance from the surface of the roll as aimed at the longitudinal axis of the roll and is movable along the longitudinal axis of the roll either by movement of the sensor along the roll and/or by pivoting of the sensor on its support, the pivoting being around an axis transverse to the axis of the roll so that the sensor pivots along the longitudinal axis. The longitudinal region over which measurements are made is greater in width than larger diameter rings found on the roll and a device attached to the sensor determines the diameter of the roll from the series of measurements by eliminating or limiting the effect of measurements taken at the larger diameter rings.
