The invention relates to a device (24) for identifying mail items (16, 26-34, 70-74) comprising a memory (40) for storing mail item information of a mail item (16, 26-34, 70-74) and characteristic image features of the mail item (16, 26-34, 70-74) and comprising a control unit (38) for assigning the mail item information to image features that are recorded again. In order that the mail items can still be identified reliably even after a cancellation in print or a forwarding sticker has been applied, it is proposed that the control unit (38) is provided for carrying out the assignment with the aid of an identification code (14, 22, 48, 62-68, 76, 78) associated with the mail item (16, 26-34, 70-74).
