The present invention relates to methods and devices for non-invasive and non- disturbing measurements of metabolizing rates of substantially spherical metabolizing particles, such as an embryo, and to a method and device of controlling oxygen partial pressure at the level of the embryo. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for regulating supply of metabolites to a substantially spherical metabolizing particle, as well as a method for selecting substantially spherical metabolizing particles of a predetermined quality. The invention is carried out in a device capable of establishing a diffusion gradient of metabolites between the substantially spherical metabolizing particle inside a compartment in the device and the environment outside the compartment. The metabolizing rate is determined based on information of the metabolite diffusion gradient.

L'invention concerne des procédés et des dispositifs pour mesurer de manière non effractive et non gênante des taux de métabolisation de particules métabolisantes sensiblement sphériques telles qu'un embryon, ainsi qu'un procédé et un dispositif pour contrôler la pression partielle d'oxygène au niveau d'un embryon. En outre, l'invention concerne un procédé pour réguler l'apport de métabolites à une particule métabolisante sensiblement sphérique, ainsi qu'un procédé pour sélectionner des particules métabolisantes sensiblement sphériques d'une qualité donnée. Le dispositif de l'invention permet d'établir un gradient de diffusion de métabolites entre la particule métabolisante sensiblement sphérique à l'intérieur d'un compartiment du dispositif et l'environnement à l'extérieur de ce compartiment. Le taux de métabolisation est déterminé sur la base d'une information relative au gradient de diffusion de métabolites.
