ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for preparing a control solution for ketone analysis is disclosed, as well as a method for using it. The device comprises a carrier matrix in- corporate with a Group II or III metal salt of a .beta.-ketoalkanoic acid ester. The ester has the structure Image in which R is a lower alkyl group and R' is an aliphatic or cyclic group having 1 to about 7 carbon atoms. The method comprises contacting a pre- determined volume of solvent with the device.
