A method for sampling of a substance from a subject is provided, which comprises placing one or more sampling chambers on a collection sire on a tissue surface on the subject; conducting electric current through the tissue to extract a substance from the subject in a first direction in one or more sampling chambers that function alternatively as both an anode and cathode during the course of the method; reversing the polarity to cause direct current to flow in second direction opposite the first direction; and analyzing the sampling chamber or chambers for the concentration of a substance or a substance metabolite. There is also provided a device for sampling of a substance from an organism on continuously or intermittently using alternating polarity method based on the application of low intensity electric fields of alternating polarity across the skin (iontophoresis) to enhance the transport of a substance (such as glucose, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, and the like) from body tissues to a sampling chamber. The device comprises an electrical power supply; a transdermal system that contains one ro more sampling chambers that function as both anode and cathode during the course of sampling; a means to alternate or reverse the polarity during the iontophoretic sampling; and means for analyzing for the concentration of a substance or a substance metabolite.
L'invention concerne un procédé pour échantillonner une substance provenant d'un sujet, qui consiste à placer une ou plusieurs chambres d'échantillonnage sur un site de prélévement à la surface d'un tissu sur le sujet; à faire passer un courant électrique à travers le tissu pour extraire une substance du sujet dans un premier sens dans une ou plusieurs chambres d'échantillonnage faisant office d'anode et de cathode en alternance pendant le déroulement du procédé; à inverser la polarité pour provoquer la circulation d'un courant continu dans un deuxième sens opposé au premier sens; et à analyser la ou les chambres d'échantillonnage en vue de déterminer la concentration d'une substance ou d'un métabolite de substance. Est également décrit un dispositif pour échantillonner une substance issue d'un organisme en utilisant de manière continue ou intermittente un procédé à polarité alternée fondé sur l'application de champs électriques de faible intensité à polarité alternée, à travers la peau (ionophorèse) pour faciliter le transport d'une substance (telle que du glucose, de l'acide lactique, de l'acide pyruvique, et analogue) depuis les tissus corporels jusqu'à une chambre d'échantillonnage.
