ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention involves a method and device for obtaining plasma from whole blood and determining one or more analytes contained therein. A sample of blood is first applied to a physical transport medium which moves at least a portion of the blood from a remote location thereon to a second location thereon to a first surface of a microporous plasma separation membrane. This movement is achieved by gravity, absorption or capillary action and the physical transport medium may be a sheet of fabric with weave or otherwise or a channeled or grooved synthetic material. Once the blood has moved to the first surface of the microporous plasma separation membrane, the plasma is absorbed and passes through the membrane, thereby separated from the whole blood (and the red color). The plasma reaches the second (opposite) surface of the microporous plasma separation membrane and contacts a plasma collecting test membrane. This test membrane is capable of reacting with the plasma (i.e. one of its components) to display at least one analyte characteristic thereof. Preferably, colori- metric reaction takes place and color intensity indicates concentration level of the analyte in the blood.
