Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for transmitting a signal. The method comprises the steps of generating an optical pulse having a time-dependent spectral variation, modulating the amplitude within the pulse in a time-dependent fashion so as to alter the spectral content and then determining the spectral content of the pulse as so altered. The apparatus comprises a unit for generating an optical pulse which has a time-dependent spectral variation, and a unit for modulating the amplitude within the pulse in a time-dependent fashion so as to alter the spectral content of the pulse. A unit is provided for determining the spectral content of the altered pulse.
