ABSTRACT The invention relates to a device and a process for recovering polymer from a melt or solution containing volatile components. The device consists of an evaporating zone passing, via a metering device, which can function also as a pressure-reducing device, into a devolati- lizing extruder. The metering and pressure-reducing device makes it possible also to process highly viscous melts of high-molecular polymers and to fill the extruder screws incompletely so that substantial devola- tilization is realized in the extruder.
