ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for the continuous measurement of the ammonia concentration in gases in the p.p.m. range comprises a columnar absorption vessel having a hemispherical plate, the plate having an overflow and an outlet. A gas distribution tube discharges above the outlet and below a sieve plate disposed in the column. A column packing, which fills up the absorption vessel rests on the sieve plate. The absorption vessel extends upwardly into a cooling section, which has a cooling zone and a gas collecting space disposed thereafter. The space is provided with a suction inlet. In the cooled state, a tube), whose two ends are castellated, extends from the gas collecting space downwards as far as the column packing. The liquid absorbent is fed through a lateral inlet into the gas collecting space. In order to carry out the measurement, a specific volume flow of the gas is washed in a counterflow with the absorbent, and the NH3 content in a portion thereof is then determined, whereupon the volume flows in the draining absorbent and of the gas that has been freed from NH3 and dried are measured and the ammonia concentration is computed.
