A device, a process and a clamping tool ale disclosed for breaking away when cutting out blanks from cardboard in an automatic cutting press comprising a breaking-away tool having cutting-away shafts (9), a matrix (11) and a clamping tool for holding the cutting (6) to be broken away through the matrix openings (12) and which are linked to the cardboard blank (7) by a cardboard bridge (13). The clamping tool is designed as a flat element (16) in one or several parts which supports the matrix (11) over its whole surface and which cooperates through the cuttings (6) with the breaking-away shafts (9) in particular in an elastic manner when the moment of breaking away comes. In a development of the invention, the flat element (16) is provided with an elastic covering layer (17). When the flat element (16) is in several parts, it has clamping segments which may cyclically rotate around their longitudinal axis, so that when they rotate openings are released between the clamping segments for carrying away the cut-out cuttings (6). This device may be used for different types of blanks and is suitable for retrofitting automatic cutting presses.
