ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improvement in a device for administering medication to animals. The improvement resides in a combination of a needle and a sliding valve member. The needle has an exterior surface, a first end and a second end. The first end is secured to a medication chamber. The second end has a point such that the needle is adapted to penetrate an animal. Substantially radial openings are positioned on the exterior surface adjacent the second end. A central fluid flow passage extends from the first end of the needle to the radial opening whereby medication from the medication chamber communicates with the exterior surface of the needle. The sliding valve member is positioned on the exterior surface of the needle. The valve member is movable between a closed position and an open position. In the closed position the valve member covers the radial openings thereby maintaining medication in the medication chamber. In the open position the valve member is spaced from the radial openings thereby permitting medication to flow from the medication chamber through the radial openings into the animal. The valve member is moved from the closed position to the open position by the hide of the animal upon penetration.
