A surgical instrument for applying surgical fasteners to torn tissue having a handle mechanism; and an elongated body portion extending from said handle mechanism, said body portion defining a longitudinal axis of said instrument. Means positioned adjacent a distal end of said body portion remote from said handle mechanism for releasably engaging a fastener. Advancing means includes at least one shaft member associated with the handle mechanism and extending longitudinally within the body portion for linearly advancing the engaging means along the longitudinal axis to drive the fastener into the torn tissue. A release member is associated with the advancing means, the release member being moveable into operative engagement with the advancing means to release the at least one shaft member to linearly retract the engaging means along the longitudinal axis to disengage the fastener from the engaging means, the fastener being positioned in the torn tissue.
