ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a rod or pencil-like device for the application of liquid or paste-like substances, this consisting of a tube that contains the substance, one or a plurality of outlet openings for the substance at the head end of the tube, and a twist knob that is arranged at the foot end of the tube, with which a piston can be moved towards the head end of the tube through a spindle, said piston being supported within the tube so as to be unable to twist. Detent means that are provided between the tube and the twist knob, and which can be over-ridden, ensure that for every rotation or partial rotation there is in each instance a defined quantity of the substances made available. A particularly simple design configuration of the device can be achieved if a hollow cylindrical neck section is arranged between the twist knob and the spindle that bears the plunger, the diameter of this being smaller than the twist knob but greater than the diameter of the spindle, and a ring is so arranged on the neck section that the neck section can rotate, but is not axially displaceable, within it, the ring being connected to the sleeve such that it cannot rotate independently of it and the detent means being effective between the ring on the one hand and the neck section on the other. A stopper that can be inserted into the end of the twist knob ensures that the ring is clamped more securely in the tube and the restoring spring effect of the detent nib is limited.
