The upper and lower jaws are joined to a double yoke surrounding the pole. An auxiliary yoke imprisoning a clamping plate is slidingly mounted on the pole above the double yoke and is connected to the latter by means of a compression spring. On the yoke, a connecting rod is slidingly mounted and joined at its intermediate portion to a thrust lever having one extremity joined to the auxiliary yoke and engaging the clamping plate. The weight of the shaft transmitted by the jaws to the double yoke automatically pushes the lever onto the plate and thus immediately immobilizes it by clamping the device along the pole. Activation of the spring controls clamping of the plate in the absence of any load, whereas a push applied along a predetermined direction on the handle of the lever annuls the action of the spring and allows the device to slide freely. The invention is applicable to trolleys ensuring suspension of shafts for their handling operations.
