ABSTRACT The device that is used to blend liquid narcotic agents in the respiratory gas that is supplied to a patient makes it possible to use a closed respiration system to which an adequate quantity of narcotic agent, highly concentrated, is to be supplied in a small volume of respiratory gas, and also permits its use in an open system, in which larger quantities of narcotic agent are required. Several reservoirs containing different narcotic agents are connected through a first switch and pump to a second switch. The first switch can be operated to select a particular narcotic from the different reservoirs and the second switch can be oper- ated to pass the narcotic agent either to a vaporizer or a vortex chamber as desired. The narcotic agent is vaporized in the nar- cotic agent vaporizer and then supplied, highly concentrated, to the patient in the respiratory air, which can be done here in a closed system. Within the vortex chamber the narcotic agent is vaporized in the fresh gas flow that is then supplied to the patient as respiratory gas. A monitoring system monitors and controls the selected sequence with the data that is supplied from the corresponding metering systems.
