ABSTRACT A device for braking the winding bobbins of strips of material to be unwound at different tensions, the device comprising a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder-piston unit actuating brake-shoes engaging with the bobbin trunnion, characterized in that two or more pistons are used, which are arranged coaxially one behind the other in the direction of actuation, and are in contact with each other in the neutral position, each said piston being actuated by a pressure medium, alone or in conjunction with the other piston or pistons.
