ABSTRACT A breech ring of a firearm, which can be closed and opened by a screw mechanism has conical threads which engage with corresponding threads on the screw. The threads of both the breech ring and the screw have non- threaded sectors arranged so that threaded sectors of the screw can be inserted into the non-threaded sectors of the ring and thereafter turned into engagement with the threads of the breech ring to secure the screw to the breach ring. In the non-threaded sectors of the breech ring there are arranged spring plate retaining members which, together with a stripper, hold and center a bag charge or the like, behind a shell rammed into the firearm by a ramming unit. The respective spring members are fastened at one end so that they protrude above the threaded sectors of the ring when the breech screw is in the open position and are then pushed down by the threaded sectors of the screw as it is closed onto the breech ring.
