ABSTRACT In the device used to coat with controllable application thickness a strip of material (1) that passes over a supporting roller (2), the coating medium is applied to the strip of material with the help of a slot nozzle (21) that extends across the width of the strip of material (1). The slot nozzle has a pre-dosing gap (23) the width of which can be adjusted. A dosing lip and the return lip (24) define between them a dosing chamber (25) that extends across the width of the strip of material. In order to permit a sensitive change in the weight of application with a high quality of coating using simple means, the dosing lip is formed with a wiper bar (6) which is guided on at least one exit side smooth sliding surface (4) of the bed (3) that forms the dosing lip. The front surface (7) of the wiper bar (6) together with the strip forms a tapering wedge gap, the geometry of which is independent of the application pressure. The exit edge of the front surface (7) forms a rectilinear and sharp edged strip edge (8). The wiper (6) is flexible in the area of the front surface (7) and of the stripper edge (8) and the front surface (7) is extremely wear resistant. The application pressure of the wiper bar (6) against the strip (l) is generated by means of an elastic pressure means (9) between the bar and the bed.
