ABSTRACT A device for the collection of solid animal waste is described in which a cylindrical housing has a hand at one end with a plurality of fingers which are moveable in response to movements by a handle and shaft which extend through the housing to define open and closed positions of the hand. The fingers can be resiliently mounted to the housing or can be pivotably mounted. The fingers are moved inwardly and outwardly by coupling the fingers to the shaft via a plurality of small wire rods which are connected between approximately the mid-points of the fingers and a coupler located at the end of the shaft and within the hand. The device is stable in the open position because the coupler is moved to an over-centered position.
