2078125 9113710 PCTABS00007 A device for cooling molten metal comprises a body of thermally conductive material having an upper part (17) through which liquid coolant is passed and a lower part (18) which is submerged in the molten metal to be cooled. The lower part has a dimension which is greater than the corresponding dimension in a higher horizontal cross-sectional plane so that a skull of solidified metal (20) is locked to the body by extending around said greater dimension.
