ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a device for diffusing matter between two fluids via semi-permeable diaphragms which are arranged in pairs between spacing plates in a pile of at least two such plates and at least one pair of diaphragms, each plate comprising throughflow passages for the respective fluid connected to the inlet and the outlet, of which fluids a first fluid is adapted to be led between the diaphragms arranged in pairs and a second fluid outside the said diaphragms, the said pile being clamped between a bottom portion and a top portion, wherein the spacing plates and the said top and bottom portions have an elongated, essentially rectangular shape with tapering ends and with the said throughflow passages provided adjacent the said ends, locking members being provided essentially along the periphery of the whole package in order to contain said unit with increased pressure within the portions around the respective throughflow passages as a result of the distance between the nearest locking member of the respective passages being short.
