ABSTRACT A device for driving a screw, pin, rivet or the like is disclosed. The device includes a stationary hollow cylinder serving as a housing. A rotary cylinder has an end grip cylinder rotatably attached to it and is telescopically fitted on the stationary cylinder for both relative sliding movement and relative rotational movement therebetween. A center rod has one of its ends secured to the rotary cylinder, a flange-shaped collar at a middle part thereof and a reduced diameter portion which extends from the collar to the opposite free end of the rod. A thrust sleeve is axially displaceable in the stationary cylinder in front of the collar of the center rod. The thrust sleeve is formed with an inner tapered part around its front edge and a locking recess on its outer peripheral surface. A conically headed press block is axially displaceable on the reduced diameter extension of the center rod in the thrust sleeve and is spring biassed towards the front of the thrust sleeve. A clamp has upper and lower jaws, each of which has an inclined rear part which is so formed as to come into engagement wih the inner tapered part of the thrust sleeve at its outer side and with the conical headed part of the press block at its inner side. A support block is arranged on a fore part of the reduced diameter portion of the center rod to support the clamp. The block is formed with upper and lower axially extending convex grooves in which the respective upper and lower clamp jaws, are received so as to perform rocking movement over the convexity in the groove. A control lever in the form of twin lever arms is pivotally mounted on the stationary cylinder. One of the lever arms has a tapered free end extendable through an aperture on the stationary cylinder to engage the thrust sleeve so as to displace the thrust sleeve forwards. The other lever arm has a free end extendable through another aperture on the stationary cylinder to engage a recess formed on the thrust
