ABSTRACT A device for the semi automatic or fully automatic electrical resistance welding of long pinched seams used on can bodies of sheet metal sections rolled so as to form casings is described. The device has a guide system installed ahead of the welding location, this being used to establish the width of the overlap of the casing edges and having sprung guide elements, by means of which the casing edges can be pressed against the bottoms of grooves in a Z-rail as the casing is being moved to the welding location. The guide system is configured in such a manner that the width of overlap of the casing edges at the welding location amounts at most to six times the thickness of the walls of the can. Flat wire electrodes are passed over electrode rollers and have a width that extends beyond the width of overlap of the casing edges at the welding location. The improvement lies in making the grooves of the Z-rail parallel rather than converging as in conventional guide systems and also in aligning the electrode rollers so that they lie in a plane that is perpendicular to the direction of the weld. This greatly simplifies the construction and operation of the system.
