ABSTRACT In order to generate alternating current from direct current efficiently, the voltage gradient of the alternating current that is to be generated is produced by an oscillator (1) as a function of time, both directly and phase-shifted by 180 degrees. Then each half-wave of these two voltages is compared separately in two voltage-comparison circuits (4,5) with the output voltage available at any moment, or the 180-degree phase-shifted voltage available at any moment. Because of the two voltage-comparison circuits, in each instance one of two switches (6,7) which pass the direct current through a current-limiting impedance (8), the output of which is connected to an energy storage device (9), to the consumer, is so set that the flow of the output voltage matches the voltage flow, in that the energy storage device (9) is connected through a switch (6,7) to a positive or negative voltage, respectively, as soon as and for as long as the voltage differential on one of the two voltage comparison circuits (4,5) exceeds a prescribed positive threshold value for switching on or a prescribed negative threshold value for switching off./ (Figure 1)/
