Selon une caractéristique importante, la surface de formation d'images est "active", c'est-à-dire qu'elle ne sert pas d'écran de projection, mais les images sont directement formées sur des "cellules" (portions successives de la surface sphérique, qui sont sombres en l'absence d'excitation), ce qui permet d'augmenter le contraste des images obtenues. Selon un mode de réalisation, ces cellules comportent des cristaux liquides encapsulées. FIGURE 1
