A device for holding the outer end of a measuring tape to a surface, the tape having a blade projecting from an end portion, the device comprising an adapter having a socket for receiving the blade and having a base which lies parallel to the tape end portion, and a detachable bracket having a platform which can be secured to the adapter base, and which has mounting means for a tape holding device. The bracket can be located and locked to the bracket in a first position, and a second position in which the bracket is rotated through 90° from the first position about an axis passing through the base and the platform. The two positions are determined by an interlocking rib and groove arrangement on the platform and base, the grooves being provided as a mutually perpendicular pair. A knife guide bracket may also be attached to the adapter.
