The invention relates to a device for image guided automated insertion of an elongated an elongated hollow needle to a desired location in an animal body for effecting radiation therapy of cancerous tissue in said body comprising needle positioning means for positioning said needle having a distal end and a proximal end relative to said desired location; needle drive means for driving said needle with its distal end towards said desired location; and real time imaging means for creating and presenting an image of said desired location and the position of the distal end of said needle during insertion of said needle. It is an object of the invention to provide a device for inserting a needle in an animal body, wherein a better access to the treatment site in the patient's body is obtained thus improving the possibilities in configuring a treatment plan for said patient and wherein the patient is suffering lesser trauma, bleeding and discomfort. According to the invention these objects are met as the device is arranged for performing subsequent insertions using only one single needle, wherein the needle drive means are arranged for retracting said single needle from said desired location, and wherein said needle positioning means are arranged for repositioning said single needle relative to a subsequent desired location prior to a subsequent insertion.
Dispositif d'insertion automatisée guidée par image d'une aiguille creuse allongée à un emplacement désiré dans un corps animal pour la radiothérapie sur des tissus cancéreux. Le dispositif comprend les éléments suivants : un mécanisme de positionnement de l'aiguille, dotée d'une extrémité distale et d'une extrémité proximale, par rapport à l'emplacement désiré; un dispositif d'entraînement de l'aiguille dont l'extrémité distale est orientée vers l'emplacement désiré; et un dispositif d'imagerie en temps réel pour créer et présenter une image de l'emplacement désiré et de la position de l'extrémité distale de l'aiguille pendant son insertion. L'objectif de fournir un dispositif d'insertion d'une aiguille dans un corps animal pour donner un meilleur accès au site de traitement dans le corps du patient est atteint, augmentant ainsi les possibilités dans la préparation d'un plan de traitement. Ainsi, le patient souffre moins de traumatisme, de saignement et d'inconfort. Les objectifs de l'invention sont atteints grâce au dispositif qui est conçu de façon à permettre une série d'insertions avec une seule et même aiguille. Le dispositif d'entraînement de l'aiguille est conçu de façon à retirer l'aiguille de l'emplacement désiré, et le mécanisme de positionnement de l'aiguille est conçu de façon à la repositionner à un autre emplacement avant la prochaine insertion.
