On crée et on maintient, dans l'espace intérieur, une atmosphère non oxydante, par exemple un gaz inerte ou un mélange de gaz inerte et réducteur. Ce dispositif est simple et efficace, de faible coût de fabrication, et adaptable sans transformation particulière sur la plupart des lignes de soudage à la vague existante.
