The present invention relates to an apparatus for holding and dispensing suture threads and/or suture threads (6) and/or suture threads (6) with needles (7) which is particularly useful for inserting surgical implants (10), such as suture anchors, that make use of sutures (6). The apparatus uses a novel design of the spool (1) to safely and neatly hold the suture thread (6), and/or needles (7) until the surgeon wishes to dispense them. The apparatus comprises a handle (8), a spool (1) rotatably attached to the handle (8), at least one suture (6), each end of the sutures (6) being wound around the spool (1), a shaft (9) the proximal end of which is attached to the handle (8), and a surgical implant (10) removably attached to the distal end of the shaft (9), wherein at least one suture (6) is threaded through the surgical implant (10).
