Overcurrent limiters (1) based on high temperature superconductors (SLa, SLb) have low availability because of inhomogeneities in high temperature superconductors, which lead to hot spots if stabilizing measures are not taken. In order to increase availability, in at least one current branch in parallel with a first high temperature superconductor (SLa), at least one inductive impedance (3) is provided. Advantageously, in at least one further current branch in parallel with this first high temperature superconductor (SLa), at least one further high temperature superconductor (SLb) is connected in series with a switch (Sb). In parallel with at least two sections of a high temperature superconductor (SLa, SLb), or in parallel with at least two high temperature superconductors connected in series, one varistor each and/or one inductive impedance each may be connected.
