ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for measuring temperature in a liquid body includes a temperature sensing element integrally embedded in a thermally insulated matrix material, the matrix material being chemically resistant to the liquid whose temperature is to be measured, and having sufficient non-wetting and insulating properties to provide a heat flow pattern from the liquid such that the matrix assumes the temperature of the liquid at a desired level below the surface, and to enable the temperature sensing element to measure and retain the temperature at the desired level sufficiently long that it may be observed and/or recorded after the device is removed from the liquid. The device may be weighted to ensure that it assumes a position at the desired level below the surface of the liquid, and a string or line supports the device at the desired level for a time sufficient for the temperature of the liquid at the desired level to be transferred to the matrix material, and then to the sensing element, the device being removed from the liquid by means of the string or line for reading of the temperature after the temperature of the liquid at the desired level has been measured.
