2092001 9302535 PCTABS00019 A device is disclosed for operating standard fluorescent lamps controlled by a starter with at least two different light intensities, in particular for low consumption lighting and intermittent lighting. The standard fluorescent lamp (3) is alternatively supplied with its normal operating current and at least a current reduced with respect to its normal operating current but higher than its break-induced current. The operating time between two switchings from one to the other current stage lasts at least two seconds. In particular, the fluorescent lamp (3) is surrounded in the area of its electrodes (23) by annular holders (16) for an envelope and/or heating resistances.
