ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Objects such as tablets are optically scanned in an apparatus comprising at least one light source, at least one photo-sensitive sensor to receive light from the at least one source, a zone for the objects to be scanned between the at least one light source and at least one sensor, the at least one photo-sensitive sensor is in the form of at least one large area solar cell, and a perforated mask adapted to the contours of the objects to be scanned, is disposed between a surface of the at least one solar cell and the zone. Light is passed from the source to the object and any light falling on the solar cell surface is determined as a measure of a defect in the object.
